The Orange city of India’s spiritual side is hard to overlook, the city has one of the highest literacy rates in India and is one of the most prominent centres of Maharashtra. The city is also known as Deekshabhoomi after the religious monument and has been an important cultural and religious centre since the last 300 years attracting pilgrims from all over the world.
BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Temple
Located in Wathoda, Nagpur this temple is built and maintained by the BAPS organisation. This temple was built in 2013 and is characterised by the 3 grand peaks in accordance with the ancient Sthapatya art.
Sri Ganesh Mandir Tekdi
It is a 250-year-old shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is situated in Sitabuldi in Nagpur. The idol of Lord Ganesha can be observed resting inside a tree.
Deekshabhoomi
It is the main pilgrimage centre for the Ambedkarite Buddhists and is located in Nagpur. It is a symbol of social reformation as well as an important historical site. The site was built by the architect Sheon Dan Mal inspired by the Sanchi Stupa and took 23 years to be built.
Ramtek Temple
Built by the king of Nagpur this shrine is dedicated to Lord Rama and is located on top of the Ramagiri Hills. It has two shrines Varaha and Trivikrama built around 420 AD is a prime example of Vakataka Architecture which has declined and is very rarely observable.
Adasa Ganpati Temple
This shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha is located around 40km from Nashik in Adasa. It is one of the Ashtavinayak temples spread across the state. The main structure incorporates a 12ft tall idol of Lord Ganesh and is surrounded by 20 minor temples of various deities including Goddess Durga.
Koradi Temple
It is one of the 51 Shakti-Peethas and is located around 15km from Nagpur in Koradi. It was built by king Jholan after he was blessed with a daughter with divine beauty which instilled a sense of Adi Shakti. The idol is believed to be ‘Swayambhu’ or self-manifested.
Dragon Palace Temple
It is also known as the Lotus Temple of Nagpur. It enshrines a statue of Lord Buddha carved with sandalwood and is situated in Kamptee. The temple’s boundaries are spread across a vast area of 40 acres. The temple is known for its comprehensive architecture of Japanese and Indian Buddhist styles with a picturesque landscape.
