It gets its name from the Wardha river and was separated from Pune in 1862. It has been an important city since the Gandhian era and is also a spiritual location in the state, The city is located at the footsteps of Wardha River Valley. These values are reflected when Maharishi Vashishtha chose Wardha as the worthy place to perform his holy Yagna.

Mahakali Temple
This temple is built at the bottom of the Mahakali Dam in Wardha. As the name suggests it is dedicated to the Hindu warrior Goddess of Death, Mahakali. The temple has 2 idols one being a Shiv Linga in an upright position and another an idol of Goddess Mahakali in a reclining position, to reach the latter one has to go through a tunnel-like structure as the idol is located below the ground level.

Gitai Temple
This unique site is devoid of any idols and gods and instead has 18 slabs inscribed with 18 chapters of the Gita. This site is located in Gopuri in Wardha and is spread across a large area of 27.8 acres. The temple is free of any ceilings and walls and is built entirely out of stone.

Koteshwar Mahadev Temple
This temple is located on the bank of river Wardha in Satephal and is dedicated to the supreme Lord Shiva. It is believed that Maharishi Vashishtha had performed a Koti Yagna here in praise of Lord Shiva and it is believed that the sand outside resembles the Bhasma or ashes left from the Yagna.

Murlidhar Temple
This shrine is made in reverence to Lord Krishna located 37 km from Wardha in Pardi on the bank of river Vena. The temple becomes a sight to see during the occasion of Gokulashtami. The shrine has sculptors of Makrana Pranala which are similar to the European Gargoyles.
