Uttarkhand's Devbhumi is definitely one of the most scenic corridors on the planet. The beautiful state of Uttarakhand is home to PanchKedar, five Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. PanchKedar-Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar. Each temple is located in the most serene and peaceful corridors of the Indian Himalayas.
One of the most popular legends relating to the emergence of PanchKedar dates back to the Mahabharata era. According to legend, on the advice of scholar Vyasa, the Pandavas came to seek forgiveness for killing their relatives in the Kurukshetra war. Lord Shiva hid in Guptkashi in the Garhwal Himalayas, disguised as a bull. The Pandavas sought out Lord Shiva and paid homage to Lord Shiva in the form of a bull. Bhim tried to catch the bull, but the bull jumped into the ground and disappeared.
Lord Shiva reappeared in another corridor in Garwal. Or Kedarnath, the nexus appeared in Madhyamaheswar, the face appeared in Rudranath, the hands appeared in Tungnath, and the hair appeared in Kalpeshwar. Thereafter, the Pandavas built temples at each of these five places where Lord Shiva appeared similarly. Hence, these five places are collectively referred to as Panch Kedar.
Panch Kedar is usually held for 6 months from April to October. The best times to visit Panch Kedar are usually May, June, September and October.
Panch Kedar will be closed during downtime due to snow cover. In Kedarnath, Lord Shiva's hero moves to the Omkareshwar temple in Uhimata where he is worshiped for the remaining six months. In Mukkumath, the iconic hero Tungnath is worshiped. The symbolic image of Rudranath is brought to Gopeshwar and the symbolic hero Madhyamashewara is recognized in Uhimata. Only Kalpeshwar is always open.
Still, if you're a stingy climber, you can go during layoffs, but make sure you're well supplied with food and good camping gear. Winter in the Himalayas is absolutely delightful, adorned with absolutely unimaginable foliage and decorations.
