Panch Prayag Yatra - The five temples of Lord Shiva in the high Himalayas—Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar—make up one of the most challenging pilgrimage yatra in India.
According to popular belief, the Pandavas wanted to worship Lord Shiva after winning the Mahabharata as an act of penance for slaying their Kaurava relatives in Gotra Hatya. When Lord Shiva in Kedarnath saw the Pandavas approaching, he assumed the form of a bull. The Pandavas, however, recognized this cover. The bull attempted to thrust itself into the ground after realizing that the disguise had not worked. In an effort to keep the bull from running away, Bhima sought to grab it. Shiva was split apart in the ensuing conflict, and his fragments appeared in several places around Kedarnath. The forehead appeared At Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, followed by the hump at Kedarnath, the torso, including the navel, at Madhyamaheshwar, the arms at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, and the fabled matted locks of Shiva at Kalpeshwar. The Panch Kedar refers to the five locations that are located in India. The temples at Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Tungnath are said to have been constructed by the Pandavas and their offspring. However, Rudranath and Kalpeshwar continued to be cave temples. The temple, which is one of the 108 Vishnu-dedicated Divya Desams, is also one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in India, with 2.8 million visitors in just two months in 2022.
