Most Famous Temple in Varanasi

Kashi Viswanath temple is a very famous temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is located on the western ghat of river Ganga. It is very old and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The meaning of vishwanath is Ruler of the whole Universe.

The main temple was destroyed by the order of Aurangzeb (Mughal Ruler) in 1699. The present temple was built by queen Ahalya Bai of the Holkar dynasty during the eighteenth century. The temple is also known as Golden temple because gold plating is used in the domes and spires.

Kalbhairav Temple is located in Bharonath, Varanasi. This is very old and famous temple of Varanasi. This temple is dedicated to Kalbhairav who is the aggressive form of Lord Shiva. Kalbhairav means one who keep away the fear of both time & death. Kalbhairav is considered as the Kotwal of the city that means he is the protector of Varanasi. Every year very large number of pilgrims come here to worship the Lord Kalbhairav.

Bharat Mata Mandir is situated in Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, UP. It is located at a distance of 3 km from Varanasi Junction. This temple is dedicated to Mother India. This temple was built in 1936CE by one of the great freedom fighter Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta. It was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. The temple is constructed in pentagon shape with supported by five pillars. The temple has very large and huge map of undivided India made by the marbles. This map portrays the plains, mountains, islands and ocean. This map is considered as the Goddess Bharat Mata. This temple gives a patriotic feeling to the visitors.

Sankat Mochan Mandir is a temple situated near Assi Ghat in Varanasi. This temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. It was built by Madan Mohan Malviya. Besan Laddo is used as a bhog which is offered to Lord Hanuman. Every year lots of pilgrims visit this famous temple.

Sarnath is a world famous Budhhist site situated at the confluence of the Ganges and the Varuna river near Varanasi(UP) at a distance of 8 km.It is one of four most famous Buddhist pilgrimage site (other three are Lumbini-Nepal, Bodhgaya and Kushinagar. Sarnath is that place where Lord Buddha delivered his first preaching. Sarnath temple was built around 3rd century BC. One of the famous pillar of Ashoka is also present here from which our national emblem is taken. This site has lots of archaeological remains and stupas of Mauryan time.
